Qualifications
Breadth of Journalistic Experience: Since 2013, I have worked as a reporter and editor at the West Linn Tidings newspaper, while also being published within the broader Pamplin Media Group that owns the Tidings. After starting as education reporter, I moved into the role of city reporter, covering politics while also writing feature stories about a community of just over 25,000 people. In 2016, I was promoted to assistant editor, thus allowing me to continue my reporting work while also editing stories and helping to lay out and proof read the newspapers themselves.
Previously, I spent all four years of my college career writing as a sports reporter at the Oregon Daily Emerald student newspaper. During this time, I contributed four stories to The New York Times. In the summer of 2011, I interned at the Daily Graphic, the largest newspaper in Ghana. Upon graduating from college, I interned as a reporter on the city news desk at The Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene.
Proven leadership: In my current role as assistant editor, I play a key role in the production of both the West Linn Tidings and its sister newspaper, the Wilsonville Spokesman – mentoring writers while editing their stories while also helping budget the newspapers on a weekly basis. I also volunteered to serve as my office’s representative for the Pamplin Media Group “tech team,” which works to advance the company’s use of various social and multimedia platforms.
Writing and multi-media skills: In addition to writing an average of five to seven articles for each weekly edition of the newspaper, I also have extensive experience covering breaking news online. I have won numerous awards from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) for both feature writing and spot news coverage. On a number of occasions, I have also taken photos and video to accompany my stories, and earned a first place award for spot news photography from ONPA in 2016. Finally, I help run the Facebook and Twitter accounts for the West Linn Tidings.
Innovative reporting: I am never content to simply write a “who-what-when-where-why” story unless it is absolutely necessary. I believe that every story has a human element that deserves to be explored, and I always strive to show this in both my writing and reporting ‑ whether I am working on a profile of a heart transplant survivor or covering a contentious city council meeting about a new development proposal.
